  • Why We Get Fat

    Why We Get Fat is an invaluable key in our understanding of an international epidemic and a guide to what each of us can do about it. A follow up to his New York Times best seller, Good Calories, Bad Calories, Taubes reveals the bad nutritional science of the last century, none more damaging or misguided than the “calories-in, calories-out” model of why we get fat, and the good science that has been ignored, especially regarding insulin’s regulation of our fat tissue.

Fitness Tip

  • If you’re not growing your own produce, here’s a quick guide on buying it at the store. The labels on fruits and vegetables will have a 4 or 5 digit code. If the produce has 4 digits, it means that it was “conventionally grown, but not organic”. If it has 5 digits, and begins with a 9, it means that the produce was organically grown. A 5 digit code that begins with an 8 indicates that the produce was genetically modified… boooo!!!!

    For example:

    6458 = Conventional, non-organic

    91245 = Organic

    84124 = GMO

    While organic doesn’t mean it has more nutrients, it does mean it’s free of potentially harmful pesticides. So when possible, buy the 5 digit codes starting with the number 9.

    Vitamix. Is it everything they say it is? I'm here to tell you, it's more. This multi-purpose, powerhouse of a machine will not only help get you healthier, you'll be looking for excuses to use it. It's without its flaws, but we wouldn't trade it for 100 pounds of organic kale.
