A simple rule of thumb for protecting your knees when doing squats: if your heels come off the floor, you’re putting too much pressure on your knees, especially if you have weight on your shoulders.

You’re best to start off with little/no weight and go down until your thighs are parallel with floor. If you can do this while keeping your heels on the ground, you can gradually add weight.

Squats are one of the best exercises you can do for your legs and back if you do them correctly… or one of the worst if you don’t.
