The goal in trimming down should NOT be to lose weight but rather to shed fat. There are two key differences. Today I’ll give you the second one.

When is losing ever a good thing? Typically it means that either another team won or you can’t find something that is important to you. I can’t remember ever losing a belonging and being happy about it.

So why then characterize a fitness goal as wanting to “lose weight” unless you’re hoping to get it back. This is a subtle but important distinction. Reorient your thinking and aim to “shed fat” instead. You don’t want to give yourself any recourse to go back to your former self, be it physical (for example, get rid of your old clothes that now don’t fit) or in this case, emotional or psychological. Adopting a mindset of permanence is essential in establishing lifestyle changes.

I recently took part in a 90 day Challenge Group through Facebook hosted and lead by Matthew Pryor. With daily ‘check-ins’ and inspirational writing by Matthew, the experience was exactly what I needed. I needed accountability and motivation and that’s what Matthew facilitated for us. My exercise and diet habits have changed for the better and I’m thankful to Matthew for helping me accomplish that.
