  • You probably already knew that your muscles grow not when you’re strength training (you’re actually tearing down your muscles here), but during the recovery after strength training (when muscles repair and grow stronger and/or bigger).

    But not all “recovery” is created equal. Simply being out of the gym may not be adequate as there are plenty of activities (work, child care, house chores, etc) that will compromise your ability to full recover.

    The most often neglected form of recovery is sleep. I’ve read that as much as 33% of your muscle growth comes during sleep, cause this is when your body is most primed for repair.

    So if you’re struggling with strength or muscle gains even though you are working out hard, one place to examine is your sleep schedule. This is one are where more really is better.
