The tendency when you deprive yourself of unhealthy food is to focus only on what you’re giving up. “Ahh, no pizza for me.” Or “No fries… ice cream… cheeseburgers… chips… soda…” whatever. The same thing can be done when you give up a TV show for a workout instead. And you naturally tie a sense of loss to that. The problem is you’re only looking at the negative side of the equation, without paying any attention to the positive, more powerful side. Yes, you’re giving up X, but in return for the eventual Y.

What is Y?

Results. Confidence. Lowered cholesterol. Strength. Freedom. Shedding of fat. A sense of calm or peace. Lower blood pressure. Longevity. Accomplishment. Empowerment. Fewer or no medicines. Endurance. Hope. Improved breathing. Better sleep. Muscle. Fun… the list goes on.

So rather than focus what you’re giving up, think on what you’re getting in return, and you’ll get physically healthier while be emotionally happier.

I was feeling defeated and frustrated with my health due to a chronic illness, but Matthew and the group met me where I was at and provided the balance of grace and truth that I needed. I lost 10 lbs during my first challenge, but more importantly I learned to be faithful with my responsibilities (eating well, exercising, etc.) and to trust God with the rest.
