  • The FDA is often times hilariously (or frustratingly) off-base with its ADI (accepted daily intake) values. The ADI value of a substance is supposedly 100 times less than the smallest amount that may cause a health concern. However, the ADI on the artificial sweetener Aspartame is 50 mg/kg body weight. For a 150 pound person, this is the equivalent of 18-19 cans of diet soda. So they’re saying that roughly 216-228 ounces (daily) of a diet soda with aspartame is “acceptable” BEFORE there’s a health concern? If one is to eat HEALTHY stuff in excess (cinnamon, carrots, bananas, water, whatever), there will be issues… let alone unhealthy stuff. Anything, good or bad, taken to an extreme will cause a health concern.

    Bottom line: common sense > ADI.
