You know what that shape is over there? I’ll give you a couple guesses.
Nope.
Wrong again.
This is my favorite shape. What is it exactly?
It’s exhaustion.
It’s sacrifice.
It’s hard work.
It’s commitment.
It’s the leftover.
It’s pain.
It’s victory.
When I finish a workout, I end up on my knees, head on the ground, hands folded above. Gasping turns to sighing then relaxing as my heart rate is slowly slowing. That shape? That is the shape of the pool of sweat my head and nose leave on the workout mat. I love this shape.
What about you? What’s your favorite shape?
Maybe it’s the upright oval of a zero representing the number of pounds left to lose.
Maybe it’s the shape of your mailbox, which marks the finish line of a hard run around your neighborhood.
Maybe it’s the rectangle of a bar of chocolate, a treat you’ve margined for all week as you’ve said “no” to the special occasions of work retirement cake and a child’s birthday party.
If you don’t have your own shape, find one. It’s all about the goal and the sacrifice the shape represents. They can change over time. This hasn’t always been my favorite shape. If asked me 15 years ago, I would have said the shape of a donut, or maybe the welcome sign at our annual vacation spot. But I got used to seeing this shape and grew to love what it represented.
We need motivation. We need reminders. We need goals.
