  • Why We Get Fat

Why We Get Fat is an invaluable key in our understanding of an international epidemic and a guide to what each of us can do about it. A follow up to his New York Times best seller, Good Calories, Bad Calories, Taubes reveals the bad nutritional science of the last century, none more damaging or misguided than the “calories-in, calories-out” model of why we get fat, and the good science that has been ignored, especially regarding insulin’s regulation of our fat tissue.

Fitness Tip

  • NOTE: I am a believer in having a weekly “cheat meal.” It helps me stay sane. I realize this doesn’t work for everyone as it can be a slippery slope. But it works for me.

Eat the healthiest version of the cheat food as possible.

Let’s say you’ve never met a cheeseburger you didn’t like. But you’ve been diligent all week, carefully planning for your weekly cheat meal. The weekend rolls around and you’re ready. I’d encourage you to drive right on past McDonalds and head to a home-grown joint that uses local beef. If the home-grown joint doesn’t offer organic beef, chances are, they’re still using a higher quality meat than McDonalds (or any fast food joint, be it Burger King, White Castle, Wendy’s, etc. In fact, they’re probably using higher quality everything). This way, you can still enjoy a delicious burger without the often accompanied ill-effects of fast food.

This same idea applies to pizza, ice cream, cookies, most anything really. The healthier the version of your cheat meal, the better your body will handle it and the more you will enjoy it.

  • Vitamix Review: Our Favorite Appliance

Vitamix. Is it everything they say it is? I'm here to tell you, it's more. This multi-purpose, powerhouse of a machine will not only help get you healthier, you'll be looking for excuses to use it. It's without its flaws, but we wouldn't trade it for 100 pounds of organic kale.
